DESIGNING YOUR OFFICE SPACE

Designing a good office space is very important and too often taken for granted. Your office is most likely the space where you are going to spend most of your adult life so be wise about using the space to the best of your ability.

THE LOCATION OF YOUR OFFICE

The location of your office in the building plays a huge factor. What is going to suite your job description and personality best? Are you the type of person that likes to be in the middle of all the action? Does your job description need you to receive regular visits from clients? If so you may need an office situated in the middle of the traffic flow in your place of work. If you prefer being the more solitary person at the office and your job requires less interaction then you may need to look at a corner office nestled away from the crowds.

THE IMPORTANCE OF NATURAL LIGHT IN YOUR OFFICE

New research finds soaking in more daylight during work can help you sleep better at night.

In the study, people with windows in their offices received more natural light, and logged higher-quality shut-eye with less sleep disturbances than workers in regular rooms.

“Exposure to light turns on and off genes that control the internal clocks that dictate circadian rhythms,” says study author Ivy Cheung, Ph.D. (c). Plus, light’s impact is particularly strong while you’re toiling away at your desk in the morning, making its effects last long after you’ve powered down your computer for the night.

If you’re stuck in a cube, Cheung recommends a morning walk or a daylight-simulating lamp to help regulate your body’s clock.
